Expedited geotechnical analysis methods for the design and operation of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines
Abstract
Monopiles are the most common foundation type for fixed-base offshore wind turbines, with foundations typically accounting for 20% to 30% of capital expenditure. The use of high-fidelity geotechnical analysis methods, such as three-dimensional finite element analysis, is limited by their complexity and computational cost. This work employs high-performance computing and algorithmic improvements to challenge the prevailing view that high-fidelity analysis methods necessitate lengthy runtimes. Practical applications are demonstrated across a range of design and operational engineering tasks.
